'We are Rowde' Citizenship Award
We are thrilled to announce the new Rowde award that supports the children to grow spiritually, as well as developing their character and seeing themselves as global citizens. The idea of the award is that the children work through a range of different activities ‘beyond’ the school curriculum. It is not compulsory, but we feel they are valuable experiences – especially considering our Wiltshire location and our increasing tendency to be on a screen, and not outside!
Every child is given the award booklet in Year 1 – a copy is sent home and a copy is kept at school so we can keep a track of progress. As a guide, we suggest that the children work through one activity a term so they stay ‘on track’ to get the three awards. As a maximum, children could do two a term, but the idea is to spend time and do the activities well – it is not a rush or competition to get the award as quickly as possible.
The children can work towards bronze, silver and gold badges depending on the amount and type of activities completed. You can see the activities in the document below. As a guide, the bronze award should be completed at some point during Year 2, the silver at some point during Year 4 and the gold at some point during Year 6. The children are able to keep and wear their badges and are celebrated. To achieve the awards, the following need to be completed:
- Bronze (KS1): 10 activities – two from each section
- Silver (LSK2): 20 activities – at least three from each section, including 10 new activities after bronze
- Gold (UKS2): 30 activities – at least five from each section, including 10 new activities after silver
Whilst the award is focused on experiences and opportunities beyond the school curriculum, the children also need to be ‘Rowde’ and hit our ‘super six’, linked to our six values, at school. As an award for excellence and for children going above and beyond, it is expected that they are also good role models during their time at school.
Our super six are:
- I am respectful, listen to others and value what they have to say.
- I actively involve myself with paired and whole class learning.
- I hand in my reading journal and home learning punctually and have completed it as requested.
- I always go the extra mile with my learning – improving my work to make it even better.
- I accept responsibility when things go wrong.
- I show love and kindness to others and our school.
We have designed the award so that all children can achieve it, with some determination and optimism. Whilst there needs to be some support from home, we also support at school as much as possible and we use our older students and leaders as support for our younger students to complete some of the activities.
As/when activities are completed, 'evidence’ needs to be shared – whether that's emailing the class teacher a photo or sending the child in with something they’ve created. The teacher then checks off the activity on the copy that’s kept at school. We celebrate what the children have been up to during worship and will have a celebration board in the entrance to share photos and track where the children are, so the ‘momentum’ isn’t lost.
